We have created a number of different maps that may be of interest. All maps are generated in the Caltopo website software (or, equivalently, the SARtopo version of Caltopo). Maps can be viewed in a browser or by using the Caltopo app on a phone. The Caltopo app allows you to download maps for offline use. For more information on how to use Caltopo, consult our Navigation Basics page.
map of Local Los Alamos Trails
Los Alamos has an incredible trail system that may prove a bit opaque to irregular users. Our trails are interwoven through and around the town and are not always well-signed. This map contains selected trails around Los Alamos, together with their colloquial names. It is a work in progress (I estimate it is only ~60% completed; working on it), but feel free to contact us with comments or suggestions.
map of SAR teams in New Mexico and their hometowns
This map shows the home town locations of the SAR teams in New Mexico that are in good standing with the state of New Mexico. You can use this map to identify teams near you, in case you wish to join up.
map of NM State Police Districts and Com Center Boundaries
The state is divided into 12 districts and 3 dispatch areas. The three dispatch areas are NORCOM, CENCOM, and SOCOM. Los Alamos and Santa Fe are located in D1 which is part of CENCOM. Taos is located in D7 which is part of NORCOM.
map of PSAP boundaries and cell phone tower locations
PSAP stands for “public service access point” and it is the method by which 911 call regions are divided up. When you call 911, the destination for your call depends on which PSAP contains the cell phone tower that fields your call. See our page, “what happens when you call 911” for further information. You can use this map to check out where the cell phone towers are and which agency will answer the phone for that cell tower in different regions. The cell towers are not visible by default; scroll down to the bottom of the information and turn on the towers if you want to see those (there are lots of them; it clutters the map).
